3,255 candidates file nominations for municipal polls
Of the total 4,146 posts, only 3,255 candidates filed nominations across the country on Thursday for the February 8 municipal polls.
The EC is holding election for 4,146 representatives in one metropolis, four sub-metropolis and 53 municipalities in 43 districts of the country.
According to the Election Commission, 236 nominations were filed for the posts of mayor and 192 for deputy mayor.
Only 98 nominations were filed for 177 seats in Kathmandu metropolis, including 10 nominations for Kathmandu metropolis mayor and eight for deputy mayor.
The candidates for KMC mayor include Krishna Prasad Khadgi, Prachanda Lal Shrestha, Rajaram Shrestha, Shankar Paudel, Ram Krishna Napit, Sudha Khatri, Uttam Adhikari, Jagat Singh Tamang, Dhana Bahadur Ranjitkar and Ram Babu KC.
Janak Kumar KC, Baikundha Man Karanjit, Sailaja Pandey, Karna Bahadur Thapa Magar, Thakur Prasad Darshandhari, Bimala Rana, Raghu Raj Rajbhandari and Reshama KC are contesting for KMC deputy mayor’s post.
In Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City, three nominations were filed for mayor’s post, seven for deputy mayor’s and 26 for 17 ward chairmen posts, according to reports.
In Bhaktapur, mayor and deputy mayor are to be elected unanimously as only two candidates, Sumitra Madhikarmi and Sarju Hada, filed their papers for the two seats, reports added. For 17 wards, only 11 candidates filed nominations for chairmen’s posts, while no one wished to contest the seats for ward members and women members.
In Kirtipur Municipality only three nominations for mayor and one for deputy mayor were filed while no nominations for other posts were filed. For Madhyapur municipality, five nominations were filed for mayors’ post and two for deputy mayor’s post. Thirteen candidates are contesting for 19 seats for ward chairmen. No one has filed papers for the seats meant for ward members and women members.
EC spokesperson Tej Muni Bajracharya said that the EC is satisfied with the nomination turnover.
“All 43 districts have sent reports of satisfactory nominations and no hurdles were faced anywhere,” he said.
In Janakpurdham, 72 candidates have filed papers for different posts, including seven for the post of mayor and six for the deputy mayor’s post.
In Bara, seven papers were filed for the mayor’s post. Hetaunda saw 25 papers filed, including seven for the post of mayor and seven for deputy mayor’s. In Bharatpur Municipality, five candidates have filed their nominations for the post of mayor and four for the deputy mayor’s post. Only 12 persons are contesting 14 Bharatpur ward seats.
For the 57 posts in the Baglung municipality, only 12 nominations were filed. In Damak municipality, Nainbahadur Bhandari of the RPP (Thapa) was elected unopposed as mayor, while two independent candidates have registered their nominations for the post of deputy mayor.
In Bhairahawa, out of 67 posts in 13 wards of Siddharthanagar Municipality, only 43 candidates filed their papers.
For Gulariya municipality, four papers were filed for the post of mayor, two for the post of deputy mayor, 15 for the posts of ward chairmen and 11 for ward members.
In Dipayal, two persons filed their candidacies for the post of mayor of Silgadhi municipality and three nominations were filed for the post of deputy mayor.
Only 30 out of 57 posts in Bidur municipality (that has 11 wards) has been filed.
Twenty have been elected unopposed.
In Jhapa, the candidates filed their nominations in all three municipalities. Bhadrapur municipality received three papers for the post of mayor, four for the post of deputy mayor. In Ward nos. 1, 4, 7, 10, 14 and 15, the candidates were elected unopposed.
For Siraha municipality, 77 candidates have filed their nominations; 95 have filed papers for Lahan municipality; 234 candidates have filed their nominations for different posts in Gaur municipality. In Birgunj, 200 candidates have filed their papers.
Major political parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML that secured more than 85 percent votes in the previous elections have announced that they will boycott polls saying the election is a ploy to legitimize the royal government. nepalnews.com pb Jan 27 06
