Interim Constitution Drafting Committee begins formal work
The Interim Constitution Drafting Committee began formal work after 20 days of its formation on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference organised at the committee’s office at Singha Durbar, committee chairman former Justice Laxman Prasad Aryal expressed confidence that the interim constitution would be ready in the next 15 days.
He said the drafting committee would find an alternative to the House of Representatives before its dissolution while no changes will be made in the position of the King in the 1990’s constitution.
Saying that the interim constitution will be drafted in keeping with the achievements of the 1990’s movement, the people’s movement-II and the parties-Maoist agreements, Aryal informed that opinions have been sought from various sides including the civil society for the interim constitution.
The drafting committee was formed on June 16 after talks between the top leaders of the seven-party alliance and the CPN (Maoist) at Prime Minister GP Koirala’s residence in Baluwatar.
The committee has senior advocates Harihar Dahal and Sindhu Nath Pyakurel, Nepal Bar Association president Shambhu Thapa and pro-Maoist lawyer Khim Lal Devkota as members.
Even as the government and the Maoist side agreed to add three new members in the committee, they are yet to finalise the names to be included. nepalnews.com mk July 06 06
