UML to launch campaign for ‘democratic republic’
The CPN (UML) has decided to launch a campaign in districts in favour of democratic republic.
Addressing a meeting of the Valley Committee of the party, general secretary Nepal said the UML has decided to launch a campaign in favour of democratic republic in order to fight leftist and rightist extremism.
He said the party leaders and activists would inform the people about the procedures of the constituent assembly and the UML’s stand in favour of a democratic republic.
The UML has of late been advocating for democratic republicanism -- originally the Maoist slogan after they joined hands with the parties to fight the direct rule of King Gyanedra that was toppled after a 19-day long people’s movement in April this year.
While most left parties favour democratic republican system as the outcome of the constituent assembly elections, two main constituents of the seven-party alliance, Nepali Congress and Nepali Congress (Democratic), are yet to speak anything officially about the agenda of democratic republic.
Speaking further, UML general secretary said the government’s decisions and works had been delayed because of Prime Minister GP Koirala’s ill health. “The government is seen unable to take decisions on a number of important issues because of the Prime Minister’s poor health. The government should realize this. I wish speedy recovery to the Prime Minister,” Nepal said.
The Valley Committee meeting chaired by Standing Committee member Ishwor Pokhrel urged the Maoist leadership to immediately close down the people’s courts, forceful donations and violent activities and asked the government to speed up its works as per the aspiration of the people.
The meeting also concluded that the government-Maoist talks have not been speedy and called on both sides to take the peace talks to a conclusion at the earliest. nepalnews.com mk July 08 06
