Foreign employment entrepreneurs warn to send workers via India

Foreign employment entrepreneurs have warned of sending workers from India if the government does not take back its decision to impose 2 percent service charge on foreign employment business.

Holding a press meet in the capital on Tuesday, the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) said that such decisions would only add burden on cash-strapped workers seeking overseas employment opportunities.

The entrepreneurs also alleged that the government is trying to legitimize the excise duty imposed by the royal government in the name of service charge.

Former state minister for finance Dr Roop Jyoti had imposed 2 percent excise duty on foreign employment business.

Speaking at the press, meet president of NAFEA, LP Sanwa Limbu, said, “During the pre-budget meetings, the incumbent finance minister had pledged to scrap the provision but when the budget was announced, there was no change.”

Likewise, former president of NAFEA Dan Bahadur Tamang, said, “We can always send workers through Delhi. Use of those routes would not compel job aspirants to pay various types of levies at the Department of Labor and Employment Promotion, thus reducing costs.”

According to them, imposition of this charge would increase the cost of going abroad by at least Rs 1,400 for every job aspirant.
