Nepali journalist wins journalism award in the US

A Nepali journalist has won a prestigious South Asian Journalism Award in America for 'Outstanding editorial/op-ed/commentary'.

Journalist Dharma Adhikari, received the award for his article, "The Reversal of Democracy in Nepal," an in-depth analysis of current events in Nepal.

The commentary was published on March 26, 2005 in Counterpunch, an American political magazine.

In addition, Curley and Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, received this year's SAJA Journalism Leader Award in recognition of their contributions to their fields.

Two other journalists have won this year's awards for their works directly related to Nepal.

Cam Simpson of Chicago Tribune has won The Daniel Pearl Award (second place) for Outstanding story about South Asia for "Pipeline to Peril," an investigative series about the deaths of 12 Nepali men massacred in Iraq and how they were pawns in an international trafficking scheme, one that gets financial support from the US government, which relies on an illicit pipeline of cheap labor for America's military bases in the region.

Similarly, Tomas Van Houtryve of Time magazine have won an award (first place) for Outstanding photograph about South Asia , for "Gunning for Nepal," a series of photographs that depict one of Asia's deadliest conflicts.
