22 prisoners; three police personnel injured in Siraha jail clash

A day after inmates of Parasi jail vandalized and torched the jail demanding amnesty, prisoners at Siraha jail have followed suit.

Twenty-two prisoners and three police personnel were injured in clashes that ensued at the Siraha Prison on Wednesday.

The inmates of Siraha Prison, who started their agitation seeking amnesty, vandalised infrastructure, including the inner walls of the prison.

Three policemen and four prisoners were injured in a clash that ensued between police and the inmates as the latter started vandalising the prison with iron rods.

Police fired teargas shells and resorted to blank firing to control the prisoners as the latter climbed atop the terrace of the prison and began pelting stones at police.

Assistant sub-inspector of police Bishweshwor BK, police head constable Dharma Dev Mandal and police constable Babu Ram Banstola were injured in the stone-pelting, reports quoted police as saying.

Eighteen prisoners were critically hurt when police resorted to indiscriminate baton-charge, the reports quoted prisoners as saying.

Three inmates and one policeman were injured when inmates of Parasi jail vandalized and torched the jail on Tuesday demanding general amnesty to all the detainees.

Detainees of various prisons protested demanding their amnesty after the new government took control and released Maoist detainees to create conducive environment for talks. nepalnews.com pb July 27 06
