Rights groups demand action against Daffodil School

Various rights groups have demanded action against Daffodil Public School of Battisputali, Kathmandu for torturing students studying at the school.

A field study report prepared by over half a dozen rights organizations including Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT), Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), Child Workers Concern Nepal (CWIN) said that a group of teachers including the principal of Daffodil Public School inflicted torture on 17 students of grade three on 18th July.

The report further said that the school is inflicting systematic corporal torture to the students and the incident of 18th July is a part of it.

The report further said that principal, vice principal and a teacher Binod Chhetri were found guilty in the incident and demanded appropriate action against them.

In a letter sent to the Chief Education Officer, the rights organizations have asked the office to issue circular to take action against the guilty, as torture is banned by various national and international laws.

The rights groups recommended stopping all kinds of corporal punishment against children in school.

They demanded to declare schools as torture free zones and urged the Ministry for Education and Sports to initiate action to this effect. They have also demanded publicity campaign to raise awareness about torture and to create a torture free society.

They had also demanded to provide appropriate compensation to the victims and manage for psycho social counseling to them.

Though the school had taken action against the school teacher Chhetri, they demanded to take action against the school.

Director of CVICT, Shailendra Guragain said, "In the name of correction, the school owners are just punishing a teacher but again hiring unqualified teachers in the schools, so the schools practicing corporal punishment should be immediately closed down. nepalnews.com pb July 28 06
