Hindus devotees are celebrating the Naag (the serpent god) Panchami festival across the country on Sunday by paying homage to serpents.

Honoring the serpent god, the devotees perform pooja and paste portraits of Naags over the main gates of their houses.

There is a religious belief that pasting the picture of the serpent god above the main door of houses and offering worship to the deity on this day protects the house from lightning and fire and the family from snakes and scorpions.

According to Hindu scriptures, the serpent-gods are protector of earth and associated to rain. People believe that worship of Naags insures that there will be no drought.

In Kathmandu, devotees gather at Naag Pokhari to perform pooja and pay respect to the serpent gods. A special festival in underway at Naag Pokhari since last two days marking the festival.

Special religious fairs are also held at different Naaga kunda or ponds dedicated to the serpent deity throughout the country today. nepalnews.com pb July 30 06
