Locals of Okharpauwa area have restricted disposing the Valley’s garbage at Sisdole landfill site from Sunday saying the government failed to fulfill their demands.

The locals had forced over a dozen vehicles carrying garbage to return without dumping the garbage.

“Some 20 vehicles of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) loaded with the garbage were not allowed to enter the landfill site and were compelled to turn back by the locals,” reports quoted Dinesh Thapaliya, the chief executive officer of the KMC as saying.

The problem of the Valley’s garbage collection emerged firstly due to the strike of the Kathmandu metropolitan city employees. That was then resolved, but then residents of Teku refused to allow the garbage to be dumped at the Teku Transfer Station resulting in the garbage being dumped at the Khula Manch (open air theatre). The garbage was then cleared from the Khula Manch, but not another problem has emerged with the locals of Okharpauwa not allowing the garbage to be dumped at Sisdole landfill site from Sunday.

He said that the garbage would be dumped at the riverside of Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City ward number 2 temporarily.

The locals said that the government had failed to work for the development of the area as promised earlier.

They urged the government to construct alternative road from Piple of Galchhi area of the village, provide employment opportunities to the locals and to give special focus on checking environmental pollution. nepalnews.com pb July 31 06
