United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has condemned the recent attack on the United Nations peacekeepers serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and urged the armed militants to release those in captivity.

"The Secretary-General is deeply saddened at the death of a Nepalese peacekeeper, and the wounding of three other Nepalese peacekeepers, serving with the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) on 28 May in the area of Tsupu in the Ituri district," Annan's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Wednesday.

The release further says, "The Secretary General strongly condemns this attack, and the capture of seven Nepalese peacekeepers by armed groups, and calls for their immediate release." Dujarric said in the statement, "Those responsible for these acts should be held accountable."

The Security Council had also condemned the attack upon peacekeepers on Tuesday.

In an encounter with the Congolese insurgents on May 28, one Nepali soldier was killed, three injured and seven others abducted. No one has taken the responsibility of the attack. nepalnews.com ia Jun 01 06
