AIN appeals to stop attacks against development workers

Though the recent political development of the country has encouraged all for the development of the country, international development organizations have expressed concern over the threats and attack against development workers.

A public notice issued by the Association of International NGOs in Nepal (AIN) said some unidentified groups has been beating and threatening development workers and appealed all not to repeat such incidents in the future.

The statement said that a group of six unidentified people attacked an employee of Plan Nepal at Sottarjhada area of Sunsari. The employee was shot twice and looted.

The statement further said that the international non governmental organizations are working under the Basic Operating guidelines and urged all not to repeat such acts against any persons, organizations and employees of development organizations.

The AIN, an informal association of more than 50 International NGOs working in Nepal has prepared basic operating guidelines to carry out their activities in Nepal.

Talking to Nepalnews, Dr. Sibesh Chandra Regmi, Chairman of AIN, said that though such incidents are not good, they have received assurances from both sides.

He added that the Maoists also assured them that they are not targeting development organizations or workers knowingly but some incidents occured unknowingly and have expressed commitment not to repeat such incidents.

“The Maoists asked us to bring such incidents into notice and expressed commitment not to repeat such incidents. They said that some people might be taking benefit of the transitional period and committing such acts,” Regmi added.

According to the statistics, the international non-governmental organizations are disbursing 100 million USD in the year 2005/06.

Regmi further said that there are 60 international non-governmental organizations affiliated with the AIN. But the numbers of total non-governmental organiations functioning in the country are 144.

Regmi further informed that they are meeting government officials from Friday to discusst the security of the development workers. nepalnews.com pb June 01 06
