Police arrest over 50 part-time teachers of TU

Police have taken into custody over 50 part-time teachers of the Tribhuvan University (TU) from a sit-in program organized in front of Singha Durbar on Sunday.

The part-time teachers of TU have been organizing protest programmes since Tuesday demanding that the government grant them permanent status.

They are being detained at Number 3 battalion, Maharajgunj.

The government is yet to release over 250 part time teachers arrested from Saturday’s protest programme.

Talking to Nepalnews, Chandradip Lamichane, secretary of the part time teacher protest committee, said that they are demanding permanent status to part time teachers who have been teaching for more than one academic session.

Stating that the leaders assured them of fulfillment of their demands during the people’s movement, he said the government should give permanent status by a political decision.

The part-time teachers have demanded that the reconvened parliament order the government to give permanent status to part-timers who have been teaching for more than one year.

There are 1900 part-time teachers working in various public campuses around the country. They have been carrying out protests demanding permanent status to part-time teachers since the last five years. nepalnews.com by/pb June 11 06
