Bodies of nine missing climbers found on Mt Kangaru

A search team said it has recovered bodies of nine climbers – seven Nepalis and two French men - who had gone missing in a massive avalanche at Mt Kangaru in western Nepal more than eight months ago.

A search team sent by the French Embassy in Kathmandu had found the bodies of nine climbers on Saturday, reports said.

Altogether 19 climbers – seven French and 15 Nepalis – of a French expedition had been lost in an avalanche at the Mt Kangaru in October last year. Of them, four Nepali climbers had returned safely.

Seven dead bodies of were found during a search at the base camp three weeks earlier. The dead bodies were found in a gorge.

Talking to Nepalnews, Nawang Nima Sherpa, an instructor with the Nepal Mountaineering Association, who was a member of the first rescue mission, said that dead bodies have been found as the snow is melting with the start of monsoon.

“Rescue work was very tough at that time [October] due to heavy snowfall. We had to abandon the search,” he said. nepalnews.com mk June 27 06
