Rights activists condemn Pariyar’s murder

Human rights activists have condemned the murder of Dayaram Pariyar, a rights activist, and also criticised the government for failing to take action against the security forces for killings of innocent civilians.

Addressing a programme organised by the Human Right Organisation of Nepal (HURON) on the recent murder of human rights activist Pariyar, the activists said the security personnel had now obtained the license to kill anyone due to the state of impunity in the country, reports said.

Pariyar, an employee of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), was shot at by a policeman on March 24 at Janakchowk of Janakpur district and died at TU Teaching Hospital on Tuesday.

The killing of a rights activist at the hands of security men is unprecedented in Nepal, said Padma Ratna Tuladhar, the chairman of the Forum for Protection of Human Rights.

"This incident hints at a new trend of impunity. All of us should be alert of this development," he added.

Former member of Nepal Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Kapil Shrestha, urged the State to be careful while mobilising the "irresponsible" security forces.

Advocate Sindhunath Pyakurel, former chairman of Nepal Bar Association, demanded to bring the security men involved in murder of civilians to civil courts.

A press statement issued after the programme asked the government to immediately provide compensation to the family of Pariyar and to take rigorous legal action against the guilty and avoid such incidents in future.

The statement also alleged that the government is trying to discourage rights activists from carrying out their duties. nepalnews.com pb mar 30 06
