Govt. will scrap anti-media freedom laws: Minister Badu
Newly appointed Minister of State for Information and communications, Dilendra Prasad Badu, has said the new government would scrap all anti-media freedom laws enacted by the erstwhile royal government and would work towards ensuring full press freedom and freedom of expression in the country.
Addressing an interaction programme organized at the Reporters’ Club Nepal in the capital, Kathmandu, on Thursday, Minister Badu said the government would set up a working committee to study the overall media environment in the country and work towards ensuring people's right to information and institutionalising the media sector.
Minister Badu announced that the government had scrapped the one-door advertisement policy enforced by the royal government. Media groups had protested the policy saying that it aimed at rewarding only those who supported the royal regime.
He said the new government would not discriminate between the state-owned and private sector media. The minister also thanked the independent media sector in the country for their leading role in the pro-democracy movement. nepalnews.com urp May 25 06
