Three Nepali women complete US marathons for charity
Three young Nepali women have completed marathons in two American cities to support charitable causes in Nepal.
In Sunday's Philadelphia Marathon, Raksha struggled with indigestion and Sworupa with ankle injury; but in spite of the difficulties, both completed the marathon. Raksha completed the marathon in 4 hours 48 minutes and 16 seconds; and Sworupa did it in 4 hours 34 minutes and 40 seconds. Including the practice runs and the final marathons, each woman ran more than five hundred miles. Prerana successfully took part in the ING New York City Marathon on November 5.
A month ago, Help Nepal Network (HeNN) had launched the "Three women, two marathons, one cause" campaign to raise $8,000 to add to the $11,000 it had raised with the MaHa US Tour this summer for the construction of a Health Post at Haripurwa VDC in Sarlahi district. Haripurwa VDC is a conglomerate of villages with approximately 13,000 people. The VDC does not have a health facility and villagers have to walk long hours to the district hospital in Malangawa even for minor treatments and check ups.

" Today, we are happy to report that the campaign was more than successful. If we receive all our pledges, we could actually cross the $8,000 mark. Any money raised in excess of $8,000 will be allocated towards Bhai Bahini Program," said Shailesh Gongal, chairperson of HeNN USA chapter.
Prerana Shrestha is a PhD candidate in Neuroscience at The Rockefeller University in New York. Raksha Pant works in McKinsey & Company's Asset Management Research Practice also in New York. Sworupa Khadka works as an Assistant Operations Manager at Mellon Financial Corporation in its Consulting and Investment Solutions group.
The organisers said Prerana, Raksha and Sworupa are very grateful for the support they received in donations and in words of encouragement. "All three are happy that they could run for a worthy cause. By doing so, they have put Nepal and Nepali women in the American marathon map," said Gongal.
Help Nepal Network has congratulated the three courageous women and thanked them for their support. "Together you proved that Nepali people can rise to any challenge and that we are a generous lot," added Gongal.
The organisers said for those who still want to appreciate the runners, donation page will remain open at https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=5012 . nepalnews.com Nov 20 06
