No recognition of child recruits: Sundh
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has clarified that the UN office would not give recognition to children the Maoists recently recruited into PLA, if they were taken to cantonment.
Amid reports that Maoists are recruiting children in their People's Liberation Army (PLA) in various parts of the country, Lena Sundh, Chief of the OHCHR in Nepal said, "If Maoists take children to the cantonment, we will not accept it."
Stating that recruiting children below the age of 18 years was unacceptable to them, Sundh further said, "The peace accord, too, has banned child recruitment. Let's hope, they will now stop it."
Sundh, who arrived Nepalgunj to access the rights situation there said, the historic peace accord signed by the government and the Maoists on Tuesday opens doors of opportunities and also adds more responsibility for both the sides.
She held discussion with the representatives of ruling seven political parties and Maoists about the situation of the district.
