Nepal's rights situation has improved a lot, says German envoy

German ambassador to Nepal Franz Ring has expressed happiness over the improving human rights situation in the country after the restoration of democracy.

Ring, however, said human rights violations from the Maoist side go unabated and that recruitment of children in their armed force is a matter of serious concern.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Nepal-German government level negotiation meeting in the capital Tuesday, ambassador Ring said he was hopeful that the interim legislature and interim government would be formed soon along with the introduction of interim constitution in order to expedite the peace process and hold constituent assembly polls in a free and fair environment.

He said intimidation and threatening of the people, especially in rural areas, must end immediately.

Ring further said his government was ready to support the OHCHR-Nepal for the peace process and National Human Rights Commission and other human rights organisations here for protection and promotion of human rights.

"The German government hopes that the comprehensive peace agreement provides the basis for a sustainable peace in Nepal and for re-establishing stable democratic structures," Ring said.

The inter-governmental negotiations would determine the amount of donations Nepal would get from Germany for the next two years. Ring earlier said the German assistance to Nepal would increase three fold. nepalnews.com ia Nov 28 06
