Temporary teachers resume protests

Temporary teachers in public schools have resumed their protest programmes demanding permanency in jobs and placement of those displaced during the insurgency period.

On Sunday, they surrounded the district education offices across the nation, alongside organising a 24-hour relay hunger strike in Kathmandu since the last 19 days.

The protestors have rejected the government proposal of providing 50 percent seat while recruiting permanent teachers saying the provision would eventually displace those who could not make it through.

The teachers have been demanding automatic permanency of all temporary teachers. However, student organisations have opposed the concept stating that it would sideline the capable ones.

The teachers have warned to close down all educational institutions if the government ignored their demands.

The Education ministry has forwarded the amended draft of education act to the parliament to provide 50 percent vacant seats to the temporary teachers. The act is under discussion in the House. nepalnews.com ia Oct 09 06
