NHRC expresses concerns over continued abduction by the Maoists
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed its concern over the continued abduction of people by the Maoist cadres despite their commitments towards the ceasefire and the 25-point code of conduct.
In a press release on Tuesday, the top human rights agency has said of the seven people abducted recently by the Maoist cadres, the status of four is still unknown. The release states that the disappeared citizens include Birendra Maharjan of Lalitpur Municipality ward No 5, Bam Prasad Limbu of ward No 15 of the same municipality, Shaym Singh Bhandari of Hetauda municipality ward No 4 in Makawanpur district and Arun Sunuwar, a student from Jorpati in Kathmandu.
The first three were abducted last Tuesday from Lalitpur while Sunuwar was abducted from Jorpati, Kathmandu on the same day. However, three other people taken under control along with Sunuwar were released.
Such acts of the Maoists have violated the international human rights standard and humanitarian laws and seem to have ignored the code of conduct signed by the government and the Maoists, the NHRC said. The human rights watchdog has asked the Maoists to release the abducted people immediately and without any conditions. nepalnews.com ia Oct 10 06
