Basnet stresses for accountability, transparency and efficiency in UN system
Participating in the deliberations on the reports of the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) at the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly, acting foreign secretary Bhagirath Basnet said that the main objective of the OIOS, as a principal oversight organ of the UN , is to promote transparency and accountability within the United Nations.
He welcomed the efforts towards joint annual meeting of the OIOS, the Board of Auditors and Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) with a view to strengthening tripartite oversight coordination meeting to use resources efficiently and effectively and share experiences, knowledge and best practices among them.
Basnet said that the recommendations of the OIOS should be implemented and given due attention to improve internal controls, accountability mechanisms and organisational efficiency and effectiveness. He stressed that transparency, accountability, effectiveness, efficiency and results based management should be embraced as core values in the work of the UN.
Similarly, another member of the Nepalese delegation to 61st session of the UN in New York, Srijana Sharma, participating in the deliberations on issues relating to advancement of women and implementation of the outcome of the Fourth World Conference on women at the Third Committee of the Assembly on Tuesday, said that the Government of Nepal attaches high priority to the advancement of women at national level recognizing significant role women can play in the socio-economic development efforts in the country.
She further said Nepal was ushering into a new era of multi-party democracy, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, following the successful People's Movement in the last April.
