Violence against children remains hidden: UN

A United Nations (UN) study report has revealed that much violence against children remains hidden and is often socially approved.

A global UN study report made public on Thursday said, about eight percent of girls and six percent of boys are abused by family members.

The study report further said, 35.8 percent boy respondents and 31.1 percent girl respondents said they were sexually abused. Twenty-six percent said adults had abused them while showing them pornographic materials.

Compared to urban parents, rural parents were found to have subjected children to harsher punishment, the report added.

Out of 3,960 children surveyed in Surkhet, Kaski, Chitwan and Morang districts, 1,327 children (33.5 percent) said they had experienced sexual violence and exploitation, the report added.

Speaking at a programme organized to release the report, UNICEF Nepal representative Dr Suomi Sakai said the protection of children against violence and abuse is important if we are to expect the next generation to learn to resolve the conflict without resorting to violence.

Launching the report, Minister of State for Women, Children and Social Welfare Urmila Aryal said, “The government is working to address the issues of children.”

Talking about the violence faced by Nepali Children, Sumnima Tuladhar of CWIN said that about 50 cases of infant killing are recorded in the country every year, while about 100 cases of child abduction are recorded, with only 30 percent of the children reported to be found.

She further presented a horrifying picture that 100 children commit suicide in the country every year due to several forms of violence against them. nepalnews.com pb Oct 13 06
