Constitutional council recommends names for CEC, ECs

The constitutional council has recommended the names for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners, reports said.

Friday's meeting of the council has recommended former home secretary Bhoj Raj Pokhrel for the post of CEC.

Similarly, the council also recommended former joint secretary Usha Nepal and Nilkantha Upreti as ECs of the Election Commission.

They were recommended as per the Tuesday's summit talks, that has decided to appoint ECs by October 17 and recommend the Election Commission to hold the election of the constituent assembly by Mid June 2007.

As per the 1990 constitution, the constitutional council recommends officials in the constitutional bodies of the country.

The constitutional council headed by Prime Minister, comprises Speaker, Chief justice and Leaders of the opposition party as its members.

The post of CEC and ECs remained vacant since former officials, who were facing charges of assisting the royal government by holding the municipal elections, which was boycotted by 90 percent political parties of the country resigned from their posts following the latest political development of the country. nepalnews.com pb/sd Oct 13 06
