Nepal lost temporary membership of UN due to Maoists: DPM Oli
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that Nepal lost the race of temporary membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the year 2007/08 due to the irresponsible behaviour of the Maoists and the wrong publicity about Nepal.
Speaking at a function in the eastern district of Jhapa organized to mark the 51st Police Day, the DPM said Nepal was about to win but lost it due to the irresponsible behaviour of the Maoists and negative publicity about Nepal in foreign media.
In the election held in New York, Nepal got 28 votes against 158 votes in favor of Indonesia. Any nation that seeks to become a temporary member of UNSC would require to bag two-third votes of the 192-member strong UN general assembly.
Being elected to UNSC raises the international stature in the world. Nepal had been elected as temporary member of UNSC twice in the past – once in 1968 and second time in 1988/89.
The DPM further added that the government is working to rehabilitate the police posts displaced due to the conflict of the country.
Oli also asked Maoists to stop ‘day-dreaming’ that they will win the state power by the means of weapons. nepalnews.com pb Oct 17 06
