Talks will succeed if Koirala agrees on democratic republic: DPM Sherchan
Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan today said that upcoming talks between the seven-party alliance (SPA) government and the Maoists would find a breakthrough on key political issues if Prime Minister GP Koirala agrees for ‘democratic republic’.
Speaking at a public function in the capital, Sherchan said, “The summit talks will easily find solution to issues like the position of monarchy and management of arms if the Prime Minister becomes ready to lead a pro-republic alliance.”
Urging Koirala to agree on a republic, the DPM who leads the People’s Front Nepal, a leftist party that recently saw vertical split, expressed optimism that the upcoming summit talks would be decisive.
Sherchan said management of arms and armies should be done in line with the joint letter sent to the United Nations. “The letter talks about management of both the armies.”
Disagreement on the position of monarchy and arms management has been the main stumbling block in the ongoing talks, he said, maintaining that forming an interim government, inclusive of the Maoists, would not be difficult once the two contentious issues get settled. nepalnews.com mk Oct 22 06
