PM says his comment on ‘republican front’ won’t affect SPA unity

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today said his comment that the Nepali Congress (NC) would not join the ‘republican front’ proposed by the Maoists would not hamper the unity amongst the seven parties.

Addressing the NC activists in his hometown Biratnagar, Koirala said the seven-party unity would not break at any cost and that his views on the republican front would not pose threat to this unity.

According to media reports, the Prime Minister said it is his democratic right to express his views. He also urged the party workers not to put unnecessary pressure on him to agree on pro-republic agendas of the communists.

Koirala’s ‘anti-republic’ statement made in Biratnagar yesterday invited criticism from some of leaders of the seven-party alliance (SPA). They said that Koirala as a Prime Minister should refrain from making 'politically controversial' statements at a time when the talks process with the Maoists continues.

During his speech today, Koirala also said the SPA was committed to introduce the interim constitution, bring the Maoists to the interim government and management their arms as soon as possible.

The Prime Minister arrived in Biratnagar on Monday to celebrate Tihar festival with his family. nepalnews.com mk Oct 26 06
