Rayamajhi Commission's tenure extended

The government has extended the tenure of the high level commission - formed to probe repressions against the People's Movement - by another three weeks.

The commission headed by former Supreme Court (SC) judge Krishna Jung Rayamajhi was formed in the wake of the success of the April movement with the objective of taking action against oppressors.

The Commission's tenure was set to expire on October 27. Since it has not yet prepared its final report, the government has decided to extend its tenure by next three weeks till the end of Kartik month (November 16). The decision to this effect was, actually, taken by a cabinet meeting held before Tihar festival.

This is the third time that the government has extended the tenure of the Commission.

The Commission has interrogated hundreds of persons including officials, politicians, former ministers, army and police officers about the allegations of repression against peaceful demonstrators. Around 21 persons had died and over 5,000 injured during the 19-day movement that restored democracy.

The Commission had also sent written queries to King Gyanendra inquiring about the latter's role in the repression of the movement in his then capacity as the Chairman of Council of Ministers. The King, however, did not reply to the Commission's letter. nepalnews.com sd Oct 27 06
