Amid criticism that the Nepali Army (NA) is yet to adopt a democratic character, the NA has started some reform process within the army organization to end discrimination among senior and junior army personnel.

In the first phase of the reform process, the workers working at the houses of the top officers of the NA will be called back and there will be uniformity in the issues of Army Wives Association, Mess and Words to be used to the junior and senior army men.

The Army formed a task force headed by Major General Govinda Gurung to develop democratization process in NA.

The Kantipur daily quoted army sources as saying that in the initial phase, 166 domestic workers will be called back from the residences of the Army officers and others will gradually be called back.

As per the new provision, all army officers including Chief of the Army Staff will have to take lunch at the mess of junior army personnel (Jawan Bhanchha). The CoAS has also ordered all officers to use respected words to junior army personnel as well.

Similarly, wives of junior army personnel will also be included in the Army Officers Wives Association to make it more inclusive.

Earlier, there was a provision of incorporating only the wives of officers in the Association. nepalnews.com pb Oct 27 06
