Some major breakthroughs soon: SPA leaders

Despite differences on the issues of Maoist arms management and the fate of monarchy, leaders of the ruling seven party alliance have reiterated that they are reaching near consensus on all political issues, so the talks will find some major breakthroughs soon.

Speaking at an interaction at the Reporters' Club Friday, they claimed that they were nearing a package deal on the issues that are yet to be settled. The next round of summit level talks would witness some major breakthroughs, they added.

Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala said they were trying to find consensus on outstanding issues by holding informal talks with the Maoists.

At a time NC is facing criticism from some quarters for its stance of ceremonial monarchy in the country, leader Koirala made it clear that his party was in favour of deciding the fate of monarchy through the election of the constituent assembly. He also said the property of late King Birendra should be converted into a trust and all ancestral property of King Gyanendra be nationalized.

Defending Prime Minsiter Girija Prasad Koirala's recent remark about not joining a proposed the Republican Front, junior Koirala said there was no need of such a front at the moment.

CPN-UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari

Speaking at the same programme, CPN-UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari said the government and the Maoists should show flexibility to take the talks to a logical conclusion.

"If the government does not include Maoists into interim government without arms management and Maoists stick to the point of not managing the arms before setting the political agendas, the deadlock will never be resolved and the talks would not succeed," he added

Lila Mani Pokhrel of People's Front Nepal said the talks could not reach a conclusion as the government was treating the Maoists as a defeated force.

He said that the talks will reach into logical conclusion if the government agrees to move ahead by placing some of the weapons of both the government and Maoist armies into lock up.

Members of the government's talks team and Minister of State for Labour and Transport management, Ramesh Lekhak said they were working to restore sustainable peace in the country.

When asked about the increasing lawlessness and the government's passivity in checking Maoist atrocities, State Minister Lekhak claimed the government was exhibiting maximum flexibility to make the talks successful and urged the Maoists to stop their acts contravening their commitments with the seven political parties.

"If they continued their act taking the government's flexibility as its weakness, the government will be compelled to take action against them to maintain peace and stability in the country," Lekhak added.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) chairman Pashupati Shumsher Rana

Stating that the government failed to assure people about its existence, chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Pashupati Shumser Rana urged the government to maintain peace and stability in the country before holding the constituent assembly elections rather than moving ahead with the Maoists' agenda.

He even warned that the RPP will start protest against the government if it failed to correct its activities soon. nepalnews.com pb Oct 27 06
