Acharya terms Koirala's remarks on ceremonial monarchy as personal position

A central leader of Nepali Congress (NC) has said that Prime Minister and NC president Girija Prasad Koirala's often-reiterated stance on ceremonial monarchy is "his personal opinion."

Congress central working committee member Narahari Acharya said that since NC had already removed constitutional monarchy from its party statute at its 11 th General Convention a year ago, 'anybody who talks about ceremonial monarchy will be speaking in personal capacity.'

Likewise, Acharya –a known republican leader within the centrist Congress party – said that Koirala's rejection to join republican front, too, was his personal opinion.

Acharya said that during his recent trip to countryside, he did not find a single person who liked monarchy. So, he said, the Congress, too, would need to side with the people and go for democratic republic.

Acharya has continued to favor republican line. During the party's 11th general convention, he even stood in the contest for the position of party president. He, however, lost to Koirala who was re-elected for the post of NC president for the third term with overwhelming majority (1215 votes) as against 165 votes polled by his rival, Acharya. nepalnews.com sd Oct 28 06
