Government committed for the protection of human rights: Ambassador Acharya

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Madhu Raman Acharya has said that the Government of Nepal is fully committed to protecting life, liberty and property of its people through inclusive democracy, the rule of law, independence of the judiciary and elimination of discrimination.

Participating in the deliberations on agenda item concerning promotion and protection of human rights and human rights situations and reports of special rapporteurs and representatives at the Third Committee of the sixty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Ambassador Acharya said that the Government has given high importance to the work of the United Nations and its bodies in the field of the protection and promotion of human rights.

He reiterated the full commitment of the present democratic Government, established after the successful People’s Movement in the last April, for protecting and promoting individual liberty, human rights and fundamental freedoms in the country.

He thanked the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for its cooperation in safeguarding people’s rights and freedoms and noted that the OHCHR-Nepal has been playing a valuable role in reporting and monitoring violations of human rights cases and assisting the Government in taking measures to protect and respect for human rights.

He mentioned that the Government has extended its full cooperation to the OHCHR in carrying out its responsibilities.

He said that the Government maintains a strict policy and procedure of not allowing security personnel who have been charged or proven guilty of human rights abuses, to be selected for the United Nations peacekeeping missions, wherever Nepal has been participating.

He reiterated Nepal’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under various international human rights instruments, to which Nepal is a party. nepalnews.com pb Oct 29 06
