NT prepares to increase Internet Bandwidth

The Nepal Telecom (NT) is preparing to increase its internet bandwidth to 155 Megabits per second (mbps) and then sell the service to other ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in the country.

The NT is preparing to have link through optical fiber up to Mumbai, India and from there, up to the United States, through under-water cable. "We plan to sell space to all ISPs of Nepal after we obtain the 155 mbps facility," said Somnath Bhattarai, manager of computer department at NT.

Bhattarai said that NT is in talks with concerned Indian and US officials for the purpose. He claimed that with the introduction of new facility, cost of using internet and email service will come down.

He said interested ISPs will be sold the space in concessional rate. At present, the ISPs in the country are providing the service through VSAT link. nepalnews.com sd Oct 30 06
