PM administers oath of office to newly appointed CoAS
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, who also holds the Defense portfolio, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rukmangad Katawal, amidst a function held at meeting hall of the National Planning Commission, Singhdurbar, Monday.
Ending the tradition of king handing the oaths of office and secrecy to newly appointed CoAS, the Prime Minister handed over it, in accordance with the historic Proclamation of the parliament on May 18th.
The Historic proclamation has stated that the PM would take over the duty of handing the oath of office and secrecy from the king.
Earlier on September 10, the Prime Minister presented insignia to CoAS Katawal.
The government had appointed Katawal as new Chief of CoAS on September 5 despite criticism from all walks of life.
Rights groups protested the appointment of Katawal, saying that he had played important role in suppressing people’s movement and also violated human rights while being chief of the mid-western divisional headquarters of the Nepal Army.
In a brief statement after taking the oath, Katawal said that the Nepal Army would move forward according to the policies of the government to help expedite the peace process. nepalnews.com pb Sep 18 06
