'Women occupy less than 10 percent of managerial positions'
At a time when rights activists have been demanding at least 33 percent of positions for women at every level of government and public offices, the situation of women's participation in private sector, particularly at key corporate level is abysmally low.
According to Rajendra Khetan, a leading industrialist and vice president of Management Association of Nepal (MAN), women occupy less than 10 percent of managerial positions in the private corporate sector in the country.
Presenting a paper on Social Inclusion and Women Empowerment, at a programme organised by MAN on Friday, Khetan, however, added that due to the growth of several management schools in the country of late, relatively more number of fully skilled ladies were coming up.
"Even in the absence of obligatory laws, we have been encouraging women to join our business enterprises," said Khetan. He claimed that one-third of employees in his industry constituted women.
"We need a critical mass of women at all sectors in order to push through the successful transformation as far as gender equality is concerned," he said.
In the paper, he listed a number of strategies to uplift the condition of women including equipping them with right to wealth and property and promoting their lead roles in a number of sectors such as tourism and public service. nepalnews.com sd Apr 21 07
