MJF bandh continues to trouble Terai region

The second day of a three-day bandh (shutdown strike) called by the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) has greatly affected normal life in Terai region Saturday.

The bandh has thrown transport services out of gear in Morang, Sunsari, Bara, Parsa, Siraha, Sarhali, Saptari, Dhanusha, Rautahat and Mahottari districts. Reports say hundreds of passenger buses and trucks have been stranded at different places along the East-west Highway.

Biratnagar, Inaruwa, Birgunj, Rajbiraj, Lahan, Kalaiya and Gaur are the worst affected towns where marketplaces, educational institutions and factories remain closed. However, there was no impact of bandh in Jhapa district.

There were no major incidents of violence during the bandh except minor confrontations between the MFJ activists and Maoist cadres at some places.

The MJF announced the bandh on Friday to protest what it calls government’s apathy towards its demands that include immediate halt in electoral constituency delineation process and investigation into the loss of lives and property in recent agitations in Terai region. nepalnews.com mk Apr 21 07
