Temporary teachers warn of fresh agitation

Temporary teachers working in government schools, who had staged months of relentless agitation last year, have warned of fresh agitation if the government fails to meet their demand for permanent status.

The Temporary Teachers Struggle Central Committee Wednesday said the temporary teachers across the country would go on ‘strong agitation’ by mid-August if the government failed to come up with viable steps to meet the demand of temporary teachers.

The committee asked all temporary teachers to be ready to wage a fresh movement.

“Temporary teachers have been agitating since 2055 B.S, but successive governments have turned a deaf ear to our woes. We now have no choice than to stop works and come to the streets,” Nirendra Kunwar, chairman of the committee, told Nepalnews.

According to him, there are 39,000 vacant posts in government schools whereas more than 25,000 teachers have been working on temporary basis for years.

“Our demand is that government's commitment to start process to give permanent status to temporary teachers through internal process should start immediately,” added.

The temporary teachers had withdrawn their four months long agitation in November last year after the government agreed to give permanent status to 17,000 teachers through certain procedure, including internal examination. However, the process has not started yet. nepalnews.com mk Aug 01 07
