Congress unification before polls may just be a pipedream

The possibility of unification between the Nepali Congress and the Nepali Congress (Democratic) before constituent assembly election is getting weaker, according to NC-D president Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Speaking at a programme in the capital on Saturday, Deuba said the efforts for pre-poll reunion between the two parties were unlikely to come to fruition and that he was not in favour of protracting the uncertainly.

He further said, “Party workers can not be kept in the dark any longer. We are thinking of making an announcement that unification is not taking place until at least next month.”

CPN (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal yesterday said some NC leaders had congratulated him for his party’s possible victory in the polls because the Congress unification drive had 'failed'.

Deuba said the constituent assembly is necessary to address the problems facing the country, but safe atmosphere for the polls is clearly lacking.

Activities of the Maoist youth wing, the Young Communist League (YCL), are a threat to free and fair polls, he added. nepalnews.com mk Aug 11 07
