We will quit govt if status-quo continues: Prachanda

Maoist chairman Prachanda has said his party will decide, within 10 days, whether to remain in the interim government.

Addressing a news conference organised to publicise the decisions of the fifth plenum, in Kathmandu, Sunday, Prachanda said there was little moral ground for remaining in the government. He said the conclusion of the August 3-10 plenum was that the party should launch peaceful movement after quitting the government.

“The CPN (Maoist) will not have any other option than to quit the government and launch peaceful movement if regressive forces continue to hatch plots,” he said.

“There is no possibility of holding CA election without declaring republic. We had said this earlier too,” he added, claiming that the Maoists were committed to CA polls.

Saying that the peaceful movement would not threaten the CA polls, the Maoist chairman said the movement could well turn into “people’s revolt” if the government tries to ‘suppress’ it. Dubbing the eight-party cabinet as status-quoist, Prachanda said the government was not functioning with consensus and that it had failed to heed his party’s longstanding demand for republican setup before CA polls, radical land reform, action on forced disappearances and eight-party ‘consensus’ to run the interim government. nepalnews.com mk Aug 12 07
