Nepal Students Union (NSU), the student wing of ruling Nepali Congress, enforced a shutdown in all the educational institutions across the nation on Tuesday to protest the beating up of its activists by pro-Maoist students yesterday.

More than a dozen students including Free Students Union (FSU) chief Sudip Sharma and NSU unit chief of Thapathali Campus, Kathmandu, Santosh Dahal, were seriously injured in the attack. Likewise, Thapathali Campus chief Dhana Prasad Poudel was also injured in the incident. The pro Maoist students had thrashed the NSU students after the latter handed over weapons belonging to them to the police a few days ago.

Enraged by the attack on its activists, NSU had organised demonstrations in various colleges in the capital yesterday. They continued with the same today also, leading to disruption of vehicular traffic in many parts of the city.

Reports coming in say NSU students are organising similar protests outside the valley also.

The student group has also said it has enforced a ‘lock up’ in Tribhuvan University from today in protest of the incident. Most of the colleges in Kathmandu and other districts are affiliated to Tribhuvan University.

Meanwhile, agitated NSU activists pelted stones and vandalized the office of ANNISU-R in Bagbazaar today.

At Saraswoti Campus, students from the two sides clashed with each other which left three Maoist students injured.

Later today the NSU students are to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala in order to draw the government’s attention to the 'excesses' of the Maoist students. nepalnews.com ag Aug 14 07
