ANNISU-R, NSU students clash again
Activists of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) and Nepal Students Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, clashed at different places in the capital Tuesday.
At least half a dozen persons were injured on both sides during clash in front of the ANNISU-R central office at Bagbazaar. The showdown began after a group of around 100 NSU students started pelting stones at the ANNISU-R office in the afternoon.
Though the confrontation ended without further violence Bagazaar area remained tense due to scuffle between the police and ANNISU-R activists during the latter’s demonstration against the NSU ‘attack’ on their office.
Police used teargas shells to disperse the protesting pro-Maoist students.
ANNISU-R central office said eight students were wounded in police beating and five students were taken under control by the police.
NSU announced shutdown strike in colleges around the country today to protest yesterday’s manhandling of its members at Thapathali Campus, Kathmandu, by Maoist students.
Meanwhile, NSU leaders submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala urging him to apply pressure on the Maoists to control the activities of their cadres. The union also asked the Home Ministry to take firm steps to improve security in view of nearing constituent assembly election. nepalews.com mk Aug 14 07
