Protesting journos arrested from Singha Durbar
Nearly three dozen journalists were arrested from a sit-in programme in front of Singha Durbar, the seat of the government, Thursday.
Police arrested the journalists as soon as they started their sit-in at the Southern Gate of Singha Durbar, demanding guarantee of press freedom and reinstatement of 49 journalists sacked from the state-owned Gorkhapatra daily.
The protest was organised by Nepal Press Union, a pro-Nepali Congress media group.
The arrested journalists have been kept in police offices at Singha Durbar, Naya Baneshwor and Kamalpokhari and are likely to be released later in the evening, according to the police.
Before staging sit-in, they had submitted a memorandum to communication minister Krishna Mahara demanding that the government immediately respond to their demands.
Saying that they were recruited under political influence of former communication minister Dilendra Badu, Gorkhapatra administration had sacked 49 reporters last month. nepalnews.com mk Aug 16 07
