VDC secys go on strike again

The agitating Village Development Committee (VDC) secretaries have said they would not be able to shoulder up all the responsibilities “entrusted upon them as people’s representatives” from now on.

Flaying the government’s apathy towards fulfilling the promises it made during their agreement, the VDC Secretaries Rights Protection Centre, an umbrella organisation of all VDC secretaries in the country, halted all works in their offices from today.

On Aug 3, the VDC secretaries had withdrawn their 10 day strike which they had started to protest the killing of their colleague in Siraha by an armed Madheshi outfit after the government assured them that it would fill local bodies with people’s representatives.

The government had also agreed to step up security for the VDC secretaries and acceded to their demand of letting them work from outside their station in case of security threat.

The VDC secretary said they were compelled to re-launch their agitation as the local bodies were not formed as promised within two weeks. nepalnews.com ag Aug 19 07
