Police identify 23 dead bodies of Palpa accident (update)

The police have said they have identified 23 dead bodies of passengers killed in a bus accident at Deurali VDC of Palpa on Monday afternoon.

At least 25 passengers were killed when an overcrowded bus met with a deadly accident.

The passenger bus, Lu 1 Kh 3076, en route to Tamghas, Gulmi district, from Butwal slipped off the road and plunged into a gorge at Laghuwa area, 200m below, around 11:45 pm, reports said.

Some 72 passengers were travelling on the ill-fated bus. Police said the death toll could rise as some passengers are critically injured.

Rescuers have recovered 19 dead bodies from the accident scene while six died while undergoing treatment. The injured passengers have been undergoing treatment at United Mission Hospital in Tansen, the district headquarters. Many passengers admitted to the hospitals are in critical condition. Hospital said six patients are unconscious. 18 have returned home after minor treatment.

However, the driver Dil Bahadur Saru managed to escape the incident.

Reports say most of the passengers identified were residents of Gulmi with others from Gulmi, Baglung, Butwal, Rupendehi, Kapilvastu, Syangja, Nawalparasi and Arghakhach districts.The deceased include 12 women, nine men and four children.
