Delivery of relief materials hindered: WFP

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has said its staffs and trucks carrying humanitarian food assistance for flood victims are not being permitted to move freely on highways in Terai during strikes despite commitments by various groups not to put obstacles.

In a statement on Wednesday, WFP said that trucks carrying humanitarian food aid for flood victims in Kailali, Banke and Bardiya districts have been blocked along various sections of the east-west highway over the last week.

"Should WFP staff and trucks carrying humanitarian food aid continue to face challenges in movement and delivery of services to flood-affected populations, we will be forced to suspend operations to provide humanitarian food assistance to flood victims," WFP warned.

WFP country representative in Nepal Richard Ragan urged all the parties and individuals to give unhindered access to WFP staffs, implementing partners and WFP trucks carrying food aid so that critical humanitarian assistance could be delivered to flood affected populations in a timely and safe manner. nepalnews.com ia Aug 29 07
