PM assures Dalits of fair say in constitution-making process

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said he is committed to ensure proper representation of Dalits in the constitution-making process.

During a meeting with Dalit rights activists in Baluwatar Saturday, Prime Minister Koirala expressed confidence that the constitution to be written through constituent assembly would guarantee equal rights to Dalits. He also said he was not happy with the term ‘Dalit’ and that they should be identified only as Nepali citizens.

Dalit rights activists had gone to Baluwatar to inform the PM about the conclusions of the recent national conference of Dalit organisations held in the capital.

The 21-point declaration passed by the conference seeks among other things, constitutional guarantee of rights of Dalits and end to discrimination. nepalnews.com mk Dec 15 07
