Top leaders gather at Baluwatar to strike final deal

Top leaders of the seven parties are busy discussing the draft of a 20-point agreement, prepared by the seven-party taskforce, in Balutwar Sunday evening before sealing the deal.

They are expected to approve the blueprint and get it passed by the cabinet today itself.

The top leaders met in Baluwatar soon after their interaction with civil society representatives concluded.

While leaders from all seven parties have expressed confidence about a consensus in the meeting, the Maoist leaders said they would not give up the demand for all-proportional voting system for the constituent assembly election.

A meeting of party’s central secretariat this morning decided to stick to this longstanding demand. Sources said that the Maoist side is all set to write a note of dissent on the likely decision to increase the seats elected under proportional system to 60.

The 20-point pact reached by the taskforce last week states that 'democratic republic' will be incorporated in the interim constitution, which will be subject to endorsement by simple majority of the CA in its first meeting. While proposing that the Prime Minister perform the duties of the head of the state it also suggests omitting all the references about monarchy in the interim statute. nepalnews.com mk Dec 23 07
