Madhesi leaders form new party
Madhesi leaders from various parties, who had only last week resigned from the parliament as well as their parties, have formed a new party under the leadership of Mahanta Thakur.
Called the Terai-Madhesh Loktantrik Party, the Madheshi leaders are all set to formally announce the new regional party amidst a programme in Kathmandu Friday afternoon.
“The party will be announced today,” confirmed Hridayesh Tripathi, a leader of the new party. He said the party’s central office would be located in Terai and it would uphold federal democratic republican system of governance and proportional electoral system, among others.
Madheshi leaders had created a tremor in the country’s politics last week by deciding to quit the parliament and their party posts citing the state’s apathy towards solving the problem facing the people in Terai. Mahanta Thakur had led the resignation drive of the Madheshi leaders by resigning from his ministerial post in the current coalition government and also quitting as the central member of Nepali Congress. nepalnews.com ag Dec 28 07
