Martin to head UN mission in Nepal
United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed personal representative of the UN Secretary General Ian Martin to head the UN mission in Nepal (UNMIN) with immediate effect.
In a letter to the Security Council President, Ambassador Peter Burian of Slovakia, Secretary General Ban said, “It is my intention to appoint Ian Martin, as my Special Representative in Nepal and Head of the UNMIN with immediate effect.”
In his letter, the Secretary General also lauded the role of Martin in Nepal since May 2005.
“Martin has been able as my Personal Representative in Nepal since last August, having previously served as the Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal,” he added.
The Secretary General has requested the Council President to bring the matter of his intention to appoint Martin as UNMIN Head to the attention of the 15-members of the Council.
The Kathmandu Post daily quoted Nepal’s Ambassador to UN Madhu Raman Acharya as saying that an official announcement to this effect will be issued within a day or two.
On January 23, the Security Council had endorsed a resolution establishing the UNMIN for a period of 12-months. nepalnews.com pb Feb 07 07
