Maoists attack RPP leaders and foil their programs

A gang of Maoist cadres attacked leaders of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and foiled their program being held in Besisahar of Lamjung district on Saturday.

Following the attack, 20 workers of RPP were injured – four of them quite seriously. Those injured seriously include Hemjung Gurung, president of RPP-Lamjung; Nabaraj Pahadi, president of National Journalists Federation-Lamjung; Gopal Lamichhane, central representative of RPP; and Hari Prasad Regmi, president of RPP-affiliated teachers' council.

The incident occurred when Maoist students barged into the venue where the RPP was holding its first workers' meet in the district since the April change. The attack has compelled the district-based RPP leaders and workers to leave the area.

Injured victims were later painted with black soot, made to chant pro-republican slogans and taken around Besisahar. The Maoists have claimed that they attacked the gathering to foil conspiracies by reactionaries and palace agents against the establishment of democratic republic.

Meanwhile, Lamjung district leader of Nepali Congress Shankar Kanta Joshi and UML leader Subash Poudel have condemned the Maoist attack and have termed it as being against norms and values of democracy, say reports.

A few months ago, the students belonging to eight parties had similarly attacked the gathering of RPP-Nepal in Pokhara. The Maoist students later attacked RPP-Nepal workers who had gone to Baluwatar to register their complaint with the Prime Minister. nepalnews.com sd Feb 11 07
