KMC fails to collect garbage; municipal office padlocked
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has not been able to pick up garbage since one week due to the protest of local residents of Sisdol, Nuwakot district.
Garbage is piling up in the streets and chowks of Kathmandu with the Sisdol locals refusing to allow KMC trucks to dispose the waste protesting the passivity of the government towards fulfilling their demands.
Sisdol locals have been protesting with demands like a hospital in the area, highway, a campus and employment to the locals.
In the past, they had time and again obstructed the dumping of garbage in the landfill site.
Over 400 tons of solid waste is generated in Kathmandu metropolis a day.
Meanwhile, all the office works at the KMC remain obstructed as four employee organisations have padlocked the municipal office demanding fulfilment of their 4-point demands.
The employees’ organisations have been protesting saying that the office gave priority to people not working in the KMC while recruiting drivers.
Other demands include permanent status to temporary cleaning workers, promotion to the rankless employees and permanent status to all the staff members.
Nepal Samacharpatra daily quoted Assistant Executive Officer of KMC Ganesh Prasad Bhattrai as saying that all the office works had been halted due to the strike of employees.
He, however, said the KMC managemet was trying to resolve the dispute through talks. nepalnews.com pb Feb 14 07
